FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK

I am delighted that you are considering Museum Kids Academy. I understand that this is an important decision for you and your family. Whether it’s tomorrow, or twenty years from now, you can feel confident knowing you’ve made the right choice.

I treat all children that enter my center as family,  and I expect the same from my staff.  It is important that your children feel secure with us in any of our many roles: teacher, nurturer, playmate, gardener, chef, toy connoisseur, puppet master, ouches-kisser and make-pretender.

About Me

Greetings from my family to yours! My name is Shante Smedley and I am honored and grateful to have this opportunity to care for your children at Museum Kids Academy. I would like to personally thank my good friend, Andrene Baltimore, for allowing me to continue to carry out her dream of providing quality childcare and education to young children. My family and I are excited to embark on this journey and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

I am a graduate from the University of Houston with a degree in Computer Engineering. After graduation, I worked for Hewlett-Packard before pursuing what I loved, educating young minds. I started my professional career in education in 2005 as a middle school ELA and Mathematics teacher while specializing in special education and English as a second language. After teaching for a few years, I earned a Masters of Administration in Education and principal certification from Lamar University. Outside of teaching, I have been an elementary mathematics and science Curriculum Instructional Specialist in Galveston County and Instructional Coach for Fort Bend ISD in the Curriculum and Instruction Department for Secondary Mathematics.

A little about my family…

My husband, Maceo, and I have been married close to 14 years and we have two wonderful sons, Maceo III, 10 and David, 6. Both of our sons attend school in Fort Bend ISD and Maceo III also has an acting career since the age of 4. You may have seen him on several local and national commercials and seasons one and two of WGN’s Underground as James. This year, our family is celebrating 10 years of ministry at The Promise Church where my husband is the senior pastor.

Our core values at MKA are safety, health, and education. Caring for your children is very important to me and I take it very seriously.

Safety. Every decision that is made goes through the question, “Is this safe?”. We will not make decisions that jeopardize the safety of our children.

Health. Our food menu has been given an uplift. We are feeding our children fresher veggies such as broccoli and carrots and having them experience and try a variety of other healthier choices. Ms. Meeca has been a great asset to the MKA family. She is a nutritionist and has a love for educating young children about making healthier food choices and trying new things.

Education. With my background in education and working with k-12 teachers and students, I know first-hand that building the foundation of education starts in the primary stages. Starting in August 2017, every MKA student will be sent home with a daily activity sheet that identifies the concepts that were taught for that day along with potty and nap times, and behavior. The connection between school and home is very important and we would like to share what we are learning so that it continues at home.

Professional Affiliations

I am a member of The National Association for Education of Young Children (NAEYC), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). These organizations are dedicated in supporting and assisting educators with improving education and ensuring success for all students academically and socially.
